Synopsis[]

Manga editor Ritsu Onodera still has his nose to the grindstone at Marukawa Publishing’s Emerald shojo magazine under his demanding boss—and first love!—Masamune Takano. But ever since Takano said they should simply have a friends-with-benefits relationship, there’s been a stark line drawn between them. Now reduced to a mere subordinate, Ritsu is left to stew in his own juices. But realizing how he feels has him considering finally telling Takano he loves him. Of course, before he can, he makes himself sick—collapsing right into the arms of Takano himself![2]

Plot[]

In "The Case of Ritsu Onodera No.29", flashback to Ritsu's time abroad, Ritsu makes an attempt to get along with his classmates, and he thanks Nao for helping him recover. In the present, Ritsu arrives at work with a face mask because his cold's gotten worse after getting caught in the rain the night before. As he texts Hatori about the printing situation, Ritsu pulls up his sleeve to cover the bruises Takano left on his wrist. Takano acts like nothing weird happened the night before, and it distresses Ritsu who wants to talk to him about it. At the end of the day, Ritsu leaves without saying anything, and thinks over the events in the bath. Thinking of Takano, Ritsu begins touching himself. Nao is staying with him and makes him dinner. Nao is going to leave in the morning, but he suggests that he and Ritsu officially live together. Ritsu tries to back out, and Nao points out the bruising on his wrists and he knows it's from Takano, saying that he wouldn't do that to someone he loved. The next morning, Ritsu wakes up dizzy with a fever. He considers talking to Takano before work and tell him that he loves him, but decides against it. As he's leaving his apartment he runs into Takano, and collapses from his illness. Ritsu wakes up in his apartment and Takano has taken the day off to care for him. As Ritsu falls back asleep, he thinks that he really does love Takano.

“The Case of Ritsu Onodera No.29.5” takes place in the past, not too long after Ritsu returned from his exchange studies in England. He meets up with An Kohinata, and she comments on how he seems to be feeling much better now than when he left for England. They begin to walk around, and just so happen to pass by Takano, who is walking alongside an unnamed woman. It is implied that they’re both still thinking about each other, even though a couple of years have passed since their break-up.

“The Case of Masamune Takano” opens with a brief flashback to Ritsu’s confession in high school from Saga's perspective. After that, there is a return to the present, picking up right after the events from the end of “The Case of Ritsu Onodera No.29.” Takano thinks about how it feels like Ritsu is always giving him hope that they’ll get together whenever he tries to pull away, and also how he needs to apologize for the events from the end of “The Case of Ritsu Onodera No.28.” There is a transition to a flashback of Takano during his college days with Takafumi Yokozawa. Takano had the woman he had been dating dump water on him because of the way he was treating her. From the way Yokozawa talks, it seems that this has been an ongoing issue with Takano’s college relationships. He thinks back to Ritsu, and believes that he was the only one that cared about their relationship, and how he wants to forget about it. Coming back to the present, Nao has returned from his work for the day, and is surprised to find Takano in Ritsu’s apartment. He takes over caring for Ritsu in his sickened state. Before Takano leaves, he discovers the key to his apartment in his shoes, that Ritsu must have dropped as he was carried back into the apartment. He finds himself hopeful for their relationship yet again. The next day, Ritsu approaches him at work, and he once again thinks to himself how he wants Ritsu.

In “The Case of Shouta Kisa No.9,” Shouta Kisa walks into Kou Yukina’s apartment, only to find a group of college students passed out, the sole girl awake going in for a kiss on the sleeping Yukina. Kisa’s surprised shout gets her to back off, and Kisa leaves and goes to his place. Yukina ends up going after him, and he stays the night at Kisa’s. In the middle of the night, Kisa wakes up to Yukina on the phone. When asked about it the next morning, Yukina acts like he hadn’t done anything. After that, Yukina seems overly evasive to Kisa, and they are barely meeting up. Time passes and Kisa’s 32nd birthday comes around, and Kisa still has barely heard a word from Yukina. He returns to his apartment, still upset about the whole situation, only to be greeted with a surprise birthday party from Yukina. Yukina makes up for lost time with gifts for Christmas, New Years, return gifts for the graduation charms from “The Case of Kou Yukina No.4,” and Valentine’s. The real birthday present though was that Yukina had bought the house directly across the street from Kisa’s apartment building. The chapter closes out with Yukina’s landlord telling them that they could stand to be more quiet, as the two of them had gotten quite loud at Yukina’s place.

“The Case of Takafumi Yokozawa” takes place during the cherry blossom season. Zen Kirishima was meant to go cherry blossom viewing with Hiyori Kirishima, but she ended up going with friends instead. Feeling quite down about it, he has Takafumi Yokozawa go with him instead. They end up talking about how much Hiyori is likely holding back for the sake of her father, but she’s still smart and considerate. The only reason she’s the way she is is because Kirishima raised her up until this point. Kirishima asks Yokozawa to come cherry blossom viewing with him and Hiyori every year, and Yokozawa begrudgingly agrees to do so.
